Today i start with my new project:
My 14 meters horseshoe panorama reef.
This will be build in 3 phase.

The available space

The project was halted due to lack of time and inspiration.
Finally the wall unit was moved this summer for the placement of two airco units.
I also replaced 3 double glazed windows due to leaking, so i had some surplus of glas, which i tried to cut into a fragtank.This failed...

But now the place is free and nothing can stop me now to move forward with the build.

The project is resumed.
Preparation are made  for the temporary fragtank to place all corals, frags and fish  from the tanks against the wall.

Mounting a few doors and i can get rid of a lot of stuff. Especially when you consider that all space will hardly be occupied by essential technics.

Seeding the new system with 15 liters of sludge from my running DSR1200 reeftank
Adding EZcarbon to speed up the bacteria growth.
Adding first corals and limited ligthing

Het system enten met zand en drab uit mijn DSR1200reef.
Gelijk begonnen met EZCarbon om bacterien te voeden.
Een aantal testkoralen geplaatst.

Adding test frag from different tanks, which went very well.
Then gradually moving all inhabitants  from 2x 40liter small fragtanks,  butterflyreef120, Quarantine115 tank

Nadat een test met enkel stukken (1/11) uit verschillende bakken goed aansloeg, alles verhuisd van de bakken langs de muur.

After a long break i resumed working on my panorama reef.

I had other priorities that needed my attention.
- complete renovatio of my 250m2 rooftop
- installing PV system with 63 solarpanels
-  summertime is also my time for watersport

Vandaag ff wat tijd vrijgemaakt om multiplex te halen.
Gekocht 3x platen van 244x122 dikte 12mm en deze op maat laten zagen. Benodigd (cm): 80x244, 80x156, 80x250, 80x50. De restant zien we wel waarvoor we die gaan gebruiken.
Nu nog elk tafel met 2 bouten tegen de muur ankeren en het is klaar voor de aquariums.


Today i went out to buy multiplex panels to lay under the tank. I purchased 3 panels with size 244x122, 12mm thick.
Now only 2 bolts for each stand to anchor them to the wall and it's ready for the tanks.

Today i recieved this package
The U-Reef will be controlled by GHL Profilux and the KH Director.

Normaly i build everything myself with discrete components. After all those years doing DiY it was time to try something more advanced.
It seems GHL has been running along quite a while and they produce state of the art products.

Meanwhile i used a old  side table to build my (portable) GHL measuring station around.

Now i am playing with the GHL stuff.
The KH director is real great and consistent. You can also adjust a correction factor to meet your own reference standaard. Which i did...

This project has been sitting there for 2 years !
Now it's time to move forward.
There has also been a little change in the meanwhile.
Due to construction and redundancy i order glas for  3 identical tanks (250x80x60cm).

There is no way back!
The glass arrived today, so we have to pull through with this project from now on.
I yet have to detemine whether is will glue it as one single tank or as 3 part segmented tank for redundancy.

Er is geen weg terug!
Het glas is vandaag aangekomen, dus we moeten dit project vanaf nu doorzetten. Ik moet nog beslissen of ik het als één enkele aquarium ga lijmen, of als een 3-delige gesegmenteerde aquariumsysteem voor redundantie.

monday, september 6, 2021 we made a start building the first tank segment.
With the help of Leon and Tim we made preparations and glued the tank together.
Now waiting for the glue to cure before placing the braces.


maandag 6 september 2021 hebben we een begin gemaakt met de bouw van het eerste segment. Met de hulp van Leon en Tim hebben we voorbereidingen getroffen en het aquarium in elkaar gelijmd. Nu wachten tot de lijm uitgehard is alvorens de stabilisators en trekstips te plaatsen.

Just finished placing the braces on tank1
I had a little help from my son, we placed them together within a half hour.
The prepartions however took a little bit longer. Three glasstrips were 2mm oversized and did not fit, so i had to cut them myself. The terpentine to fill the glass cutter was used up, so i had to go out for a new bottle.
After that cutting the glas was easy peasy.
Next time i will use 5-6mm tolerance for the braces

Net klaar met het plaatsen van de stabilisators en trekstrips op bak1. Ik had een beetje hulp van mijn zoon, we plaatsten ze samen binnen een half uur. De voorbereidingen duurden echter wat langer. Drie glasstroken waren 2mm te lang en pasten niet, dus moest ik ze zelf snijden. De terpentine om de glassnijder te vullen was op, dus ik moest op pad voor een nieuwe fles. Daarna was het snijden van het glas een makkie. De volgende keer zal ik in mijn ontwerp 5-6mm tolerantie aanhouden voor de stabilistatoren en trekstrips.

Clamps removed from tank1 + extra kit on braces
Moved 140 liter development tank to diningroom
My friend Stefan came and together we move tank1 into it's final position.
Cleared the stand for section 2+3 as preparation to extend this stand with 1 meter.

Friday, september 10, 2021 - completion of section1
Planning the drill holes to connect tank1 to section2. Also planning the optional overflow.
Glued in a vertical brace to protect drillholes against forces from the front panel.
Bolted stand of section 1 to the wall.
Rewired  and placed new poweroutlet for the  airco unit.
- Next job: extend section 2 stand from 4 to 5 meter.

Vrijdag, 10 september, 2021- afronden sectie1
Uittekenen van de boorgaten om aquarium1 met sectie2 te verbinden. Tevens uittekenen van de optionele overloop.  Een verticale stabilisator geplakt om de boorgaten te beschermen tegen krachten van het frontpaneel. Onderstel van sectie 1 aan de muur vastgebout. Nieuwe bedrading en stopcontact voor de airco unit geplaatst.
- Volgende klus: sectie 2 verlengen van 4 naar 5 meter.

Sunday, September 12, 2021 - #panoramareef section2 stand finished
The day started with cutting away the excess silicone sealant from aquarium1.
The stand of section2 was bolted to the back wall, after which it was extended from 4 to 5 metres. For this, the KHD setup of the 1200L reef had to be moved and an end support had to be made.

Zaterdag hadden we er geen zin in, dus  niet aan de panoramarif gewerkt.
Zondag, 12 september 2021 - sectie2 onderstel afgemaakt
De dag begon met het wegsnijden  van de overtollige siliconenkit van aquarium1.
Het onderstel van sectie2 is vastgebout tegen de achterwand, waarna deze verlengd is van 4 naar 5 meter. Sunday, september 11, 2021 - moving the #butterflyreef
There was no enough space to  build the #panoramareef tanksection2, so the butterflyreef needed to move.
All the electric wiring of the #DSRreef1200 was in the cabinet below, so that needed rewiring.
The tank was emptied down to 10cm, moved , refilled, replumbed and rewired to make it operational again.

Zondag 11 september 2021 - verhuizen van de #butterflyreef.
 Er was niet genoeg ruimte om de #panoramareef aquariumsecrtie2 te bouwen, dus de butterflyreef moest verhuizen. Alle elektrische bedrading van de #DSRreef1200 zat in de kast eronder, dus die moest opnieuw bedraad worden. Removed the wall unit to make room for a 120x100 pallet box that will serve as a temporary storage for coral and fish from the #EZ550HYB system. This is going out and in its place comes the old 1200litre tank which I will probably set up as a primary fish tank. The idea is to use less lighting than is normally required for a reef aquarium, so keeping this tank is not a big expense. I wonder how long I will be able to keep this up...

Het wandmeubel verwijderd om plaats te maken voor een palletbox van 120x100 die zal dienen als tijdelijke opvang van koraal en vis uit de #EZ550HYB systeem.
Deze gaat eruit en daar in de plaats komt de oude 1200liter bak die ik waarschijnlijk als een primair vissenbak gaat inrichten. De gedacht is er minder te gaan belichten dan normaal voor een rifaquariun vereist is, waardoor het behouden van deze bak geen grote kostenplaatje is. Wednesday, 15 September 2021 #Panoramareef - drilling 4 holes. Today the diamond glass drills finally arrived. I was waiting to be able to continue. First I had to make a drilling template from plywood and mount it in the right place. To allow fish to swim back and forth from section1 to section2, I made two 100mm holes to connect the aquariums. For this, I had to drill four 100mm holes in 10mm glass. It took me 2 hours because I was too careful. Once I got the hang of it, it was 10-15 minutes per hole.
After alignment, I drilled the end of section 2 flat on the table
 The next step is to prepare the glass to seal section 2.


Woensdag 15 september 2021 #Panoramareef - 4 gaten boren.
Vandaag zijn eindelijk de diamant glasboren aangekomen. Ik was  er op aan het wachten om verder te kunnen gaan.
Als eerst moest ik een boormal maken van triplex en monteren op de juiste plaats.
Om vissen heen en weer te laten zwemmen van sectie1 naar sectie2, heb ik twee 100mm gaten gemaakt om de aquariums met elkaar te verbinden. Daarvoor moest ik vier 100mm gaten boren in 10mm glas. Het kostte me 2 uur, omdat ik te voorzichtig was. Toen ik het eenmaal onder de knie had, was het 10-15 minuten per gat.
Na uitlijning heb ik de kopse kant van sectie2 vlak op de tafel verder geboord
De volgende stap is: het voorbereiden van het glas om sectie 2 te kitten.

Thursday, September 16, 2021 - #panoramareef section2/3 fitting and measuring....
The rear, side, and bottom panels have been , sanded, cleaned, dried, and put in place.
Since this is made up of more than 5 panels, everything does need to fit together properly before we can begin to seal the tank
There will be some fitting pieces (stabilizers) to be cut, but we'll do that in between.

Donderdag, 16 september 2021 - #panoramareef sectie2/3 passen en meten...
De achter-, zij-, en bodemplaten zijn gezoet, gereinigd, gedroogd en op hun plaats gezet.
Aangezien dit uit meer dan 5 panelen bestaan moet alles wel goed in elkaar passen voordat we kunnen beginnen met kitten.
Er zullen nog wat passtukken (stabilisatoren) moeten worden gesneden, maar dan doen we tussendoor.

The job started with removing all help tools used for supporting and aligning of the glas panels.
Cutting and cleaning the bracings, placing the clamps to align the bracing and than glueing them.
That's a lot of clamps and siliconekit......

donderdag 23 september 2021 - plaatsen van de stabilisator en trekstrips voor sectie 2/3
De klus begon met het verwijderen van alle hulpgereedschappen die zijn gebruikt voor het ondersteunen en uitlijnen van de glaspanelen.
Het op maat snijden en schoonmaken van de strips, het plaatsen van de lijmklemmen om de stabilisators uit te lijnen en ze vervolgens te lijmen.
Dat zijn een hoop klemmen en siliconenkit......

Sealing the two 100mm holes connecting section1 to section 2/3
Placed 2 extra support strips between the front/rear bracing.
Attempting to cut the  four 55cm vertical bracing strips for application at the seem of section 2/3.
This failed misserably, so i called it the day.
 We went out for dinner to celabrate my wife birthday with my 2 kids. My daughter came home from groningen for the occasion.

Afdichten van de twee 100mm gaten die sectie 1 met sectie 2/3 verbinden
Plaatsen van 2 trekstrippen tussen de voorste/achterste stabilisatoren
Poging om de vier verticale verstevigingsstrips van 55cm te snijden voor toepassing op de overgang van sectie 2/3.
Dit mislukte jammerlijk, dus ik hield het voor gezien.
 We zijn daarna uit eten geweest om de verjaardag van mijn vrouw te vieren met mijn 2 kinderen. Mijn dochter kwam voor de gelegenheid thuis uit Groningen.

Saterday, september 25, 2021 - #Panoramareef - last tasks before filling the tank
Finally i manage to cut the 55cm strips and glued them. The separationrack fits perfectly inbetween the seam.
Next was drilling two 55mm holes to place the tank connectors. These will be used as surface skimmers. I will probably be using a XS sump for this purpose
I'am not a real fan of these tank connectors, so i took extra precaution by glueing them.
The plumbing will be simpel an minimal.
Now wait a few days for the silicone to cure and do a fill test.

Zaterdag, 25 september 2021 - de laatste loodjes voor het vullen van het aquarium
Eindelijk heb ik de stroken van 55 cm gesneden en gelijmd. Het scheidingsrek past perfect tussen de naad.
Het volgende was het boren van twee 55mm gaten om de tankdoorvoeren te plaatsen. Deze zullen worden gebruikt als oppervlakte skimmers. Ik zal waarschijnlijk een XS sump gebruiken voor dit doel
Ik ben niet zo'n fan van deze kneldoorvoeren, dus heb ik ze voor de zekerheid gelijmd.
Het loodgieterswerk zal eenvoudig en minimaal zijn.
Nu nog een paar dagen wachten tot de siliconen uitgehard zijn en een vultest doen.

Friday, 1 October 2021 #panoramareef - mounting GHL Mitras LX7206
I put some slats at the bottom of the cabinet to mount the GHL stands and have 3 already mounted. The other 2 will be installed later. I need to take them out of the EZ2Goreef and put something else in there.
After almost 1.5 years of testing on the butterflyreef and EZ2Goreef, I decided that these fixtures would be a nice addition to the panoramaeef section1.
I filled tank section1 with tap water to the point that it overflowed into section 2/3
Now it contains exactly 780 liters. No leaks!


Vrijdag, 1 oktober 2021 #panoramareef - montage GHL Mitras LX7206
Ik hen wat latjes onderin de kast geplaatst om de GHL statieven te monteren en heb 3 stuks reeds gemonteerd. De andere 2 zullen later geplaatst worden. Ik moet ze uit de EZ2Goreef halen en er iets anders neerzetten.
Na bijna 1,5 jaar testen op de butterflyreef en EZ2Goreef heb ik besloten dat deze armaturen een mooie aanvulling zouden zijn op de panoramareef sectie1.
Ik vulde tanksectie1 met kraanwater tot aan het punt dat het overliep naar sectie 2/3
Nu bevat het precies 780 liter. Geen lekken!

Saturday, 2 October 2021 #Panoramareef- saltwater mixing.
To do this, first turn on some flow pumps to speed up the mixing.
Step1 calculate water volume
Step2 calculate salts using the CRS calculator
Step3 weigh out NaCl+, MgSO4+, Mg+, Ca+ and add them to the aquarium in separate piles.
MgSO4+ and Ca+ must not come into contact with each other.
Step4 Weigh out KH+ and dissolve it in water ~50gr/L while stirring. When everything is dissolved, pour the liquid into the aquarium.
Step5 Allow the salt heaps to dissolve thoroughly for a few hours.

Zaterdag, 2 oktober 2021 #Panoramareef- zoutwater aanmaken.
Zet daarvoor eerst een aantal stromingspompen aan om het mengen teversnellen.
Stap1 watervolume berekenen
Stap2 zouten bereken mer de CRScalculator
Stap3 NaCl+, MgSO4+, Mg+, Ca+  afwegen en in gescheiden hoopjes in het aquarium doen.
MgSO4+ en Ca+ mogen niet met elkaar is contact komen.
Stap4 KH+ afwegen en al roerend oplossen in water ~50gr/L. Indien alles opgelost is mag het vloeistof in het aquarium gegoten worden.
Stap5 Laat de zouthoopjes een paar uren goed oplossen.

Sunday, oktober 3, 2021, #panoramareef - sandbed, seeding and feeding.
100 kilo coralsand 1-2 mm was placed into segement 2/3. 40 liter sludge from the EZ550reef was placed into segment1.
After that we daily dose 23ml easy carbon.
The water is clouded from the sand.
We wait 3 days before using a powerfilter to clear the water.

Zondag, 3 oktober 2021, #panoramareef - zandbed, enten en voeden.
100 kilo koraalzsnd van 1-2 mm werd in segment 2/3 geplaatst. 40 liter slib uit de EZ550reef werd in segment1 geplaatst.
Daarna wordt er dagelijks 23ml easy carbon gedoseerd.
Het water is troebel van het zand.
We wachten 3 dagen voordat we een powerfilter gebruiken om het water helder te maken.

Monday, oktober 4, 2021 - #panoramereef finishing the stand.

Sanded the planks and fitted the intermediate uprights of the frame. Now that these are in place, the purlin laths have been removed. Those legs are not going anywhere anymore.

De planken geschuurd en de tussenstijlen van het onderstel geplaats. Nu de tussenstijlen vastgezet zijn zijn de latjes voor de gording verwijderd. Die poten gaat nergens meer heen.

Tuesday, oktober 5, 2021 #panoramareef - mainflow direction.
Today i am doing the plumbing and determing the mainflow direction. I choose to do the plumbing above the tank because it's saver, easier and less powerconsuming, because there are less corners used and less pipe length required.
For the ecstatics the pipe can be hidden behind a panel later on.
Today (earlier as planned) i put in another bucket of slugde and started two powerfilter to filter out the calciumcarbonate percipitate.
Later on i placed three bucket of deadrock into the tank.

Placing of the sand did not have much effect on the Alk and Calcium  7,6dkh /430ppm
Nitrate an phosphat are just fine 5ppm / 0,03ppm

Dinsdag, 5 oktober 2021 #panoramareef - hoofdstroomrichting.
Vandaag ben ik bezig met het loodgieterswerk en het bepalen van de hoofdstroomrichting. Ik heb ervoor gekozen om het loodgieterswerk boven het aquarium te doen  omdat het  veiliger, makkelijker en zuiniger is en er minder hoeken en leidinglengte nodig zijn.
Voor de ecstatica kan de leiding later achter een paneel worden weggewerkt.
Vandaag (eerder dan voorgenomen) heb ik nog een emmer bodemprut erin gedaan en twee powerfilters opgestart om het calciumcarbonaat-percipitaat eruit te filteren.
Later in de avond 3 emmers met doodsteen uit de tuin zo in de bak geplaatst

Wednesday, oktober 5, 2021 #panoramareef - deadrock and  powerfilter.
I placed an additional 75 kilo coralsand  and 120 kilo deadrock that i had lying around in the garden.
The watervolume up till now taken in by sand and rock is about 200 liters
The water is clearing up slightly due to the powerfilter (next time beter rinse the sand)
On the other hand.... now is can't be tempted to rush things and get into trouble. I have to sit this one out until the water has been cleared.

Woensdag 5 oktober 2021 #panoramareef - dood steen en powerfilter.
Ik heb een extra 75 kilo koraalzand en 120 kilo dood steen geplaatst die ik nog in de tuin had liggen.
Het watervolume tot nu toe ingenomen door zand en steen is ongeveer 200 liter
Het water wordt iets helderder door de powerfilter (volgende keer beter het zand uitspoelen)
Aan de andere kant.... nu kan ik niet in de verleiding komen om dingen te overhaasten en in de problemen te komen. Ik zal deze moeten afwachten tot het water geklaard is.

20:00 Leon Koopmans and Stefan Vonk visited me and at some point i said i was going to move the inhabitant of all the small tanks towards section1 this weekend.
They offered to do it right now, so we did.....
As well oiled machine we move 2 tanks and cleaned up afterwards.

20:00 Leon Koopmans en Stefan Vonk kwamen langs en op een gegeven moment zei ik dat ik de bewoner van alle kleine bakken dit weekend ging verhuizen naar sectie1.
Ze boden aan om het nu te doen, dus dat deden we.....
Als een goed geoliede machine verplaatsen we 2 aquarium en ruimden daarna op.

Tuesday, oktober 12, 2021 11:00am #panoramareef - Happy with progres up till now. 5x  GHL mitrax LX7205 used on 40% max producing 240PAR on the bottom @40cm waterhight. Slight silcate-algae showing up, which is normal in this stage.
In the weekend we did some small chores like mounting doors and lamp to segment1. Primary waiting for the weather to clearup so  i can sand the raw planks outside.
Beside finishing the doors, the next mayor step is moving the  water and lifestock from #DSR1200reef to segment2

Dinsdag, 12 oktober 2021 #panoramareef - tevreden met de progessie tot nu toe. 5x GHL mitrax LX7205 gebruikt op 40% max. produceert 240PAR op de bodem @40cm waterhoogte. Lichte silcaatalg op de bodem, wat normaal is in dit stadium.
In het weekend hebben we wat kleine klusjes gedaan zoals deuren en lamp monteren aan segment1. Voornamelijk wachten tot het weer opklaart zodat ik de ruwe planken buiten kan schuren.
Naast het afwerken van de deuren, is de volgende grote stap het verplaatsen van het water en het vee van de #DSR1200reef naar segment2

Finally it stopped raining and i work on the door. Sanding the planks, putting the door together and mounting them in front of the stand. My sanding belt was worn out so i stopped. Need to get new an spares to continue. Still three doors to go......

Eindelijk stopte het met regenen zodat ik aan de deuren kon werken. De planken schuren, de deur in elkaar zetten en ze voor de onderbouw monteren. Mijn schuurband was versleten dus ben ik gestopt. Ik moet nieuwe en reserve hebben om verder te gaan. Nog drie deuren te gaan......

Thursday, oktober 14, 2021 - #panoramareef - the esthetics (tryout)
Drill holes into the doors which serves as handles and placed magnetic doorlocks. Also experimenting with frontpanels for the looks of it.

The panorama reef is built in between. The emphasis here is that it must remain fun.
The "moments of inspiration" must come together. That is why we sometimes jump from one subject to another.
What makes it more complex is that I can't fill the panoramareef in one go as long as the DSR1200reef is positioned perpendicular to it, because of the maximum floor load.
Also the bad weather and the shorter days make it more difficult to keep on working.
Normally I like working in the garden when the weather is nice.
But everything is progressing steadily and the end result I am working towards is becoming visible.
Note: Keeping a diary/report from the beginning is meant as a reference for myself. It is especially easy to read back how you handled things in the past and how you could possibly improve in the future.

Donderdag, 14 oktober 2021 - # panoramareef - de esthetiek (probeersel)
Gaten boren in de deuren die dienen als handgrepen en magnetische deursloten plaatsen. Ook experimenteren met frontpanelen voor het uiterlijk.
De panoramareef wordt tussen de bedrijven door gebouwd. Daarbij lig de nadruk op dat het leuk moet blijven.
Het moet geheel van de "inspiratie momenten" komen. Daarom springen we soms van de hak op de tak.
Wat het complexer maak is dat ik de panoramareef  niet in 1 keer kan afvullen zolang de DSR1200reef dwars daarop staat. Dit i.v.m. de maximale vloer belasting.
Ook het slechte weer en de kortere dagen maken het lastiger om door te klussen.
Normaliter vind ik het met mooi weer veel leuker klussen in de tuin.
Maar alles vordert gestaagd en het eindresultaat waar ik naartoe werkt begint zichbaar te worden.
Note: Het bijhouden van dagboek/verslag vanaf het begin is voor mijzelf als naslag bedoeld. Het is vooral makkelijk om terug te kunnen lezen hoe je zaken in het verleden aangepakt hebt en hoe je eventueel zou kunnen verbeteren in de toekomst

I did not intend to use a sump as i was suppose to be done. I had some glas lying around in the garden, so i decided to build one either way.
Because is didn't want to support and remove a support beam i cut the sump in 2 parts, which will be glued together after the placement. Just having great fun building useless stuff

Ik was niet van plan om een sump te gebruiken zoals ik verondersteld werd te doen. Ik had nog wat glas liggen in de tuin, dus besloot ik er toch maar een te bouwen.
Omdat ik geen steunbalk wilde verwijderen heb ik de sump in 2 delen gesneden, die na de plaatsing aan elkaar gelijmd zullen worden. Ik heb blijkbaar gewoon veel plezier van het bouwen van onzinnig spul

Monday, oktober 19, 2021,  #panoramareef - transplantation of the DSR1200reef.
This was quite a busy day aad leijendekkers come at 12:00 and we had quite a task moving all corals and fish and water from old tank to te new one
We try to do some scaping but we would not saw there was no time enough, so we just move all coral to segment3.
Some colonies were over 40 kilos and we could not move them out, so we start breaking them up in the tank.
Aad left at 17:00 after we emptied the old tank.

Maandag 19 oktober 2021, #panoramareef - transplantatie van de DSR1200reef.
Dit was een drukke dag, aad leijendekkers kwamen om 12:00 en we hadden een hele klus om alle koralen, vissen en water van de oude naar de nieuwe bak te verplaatsen.
We probeerden wat te scapen maar we zagen dat er geen tijd genoeg was, dus hebben we maar alle koralen naar segment3 verplaatst.
Sommige kolonies waren meer dan 40 kilo en we konden ze niet verplaatsen, dus zijn we begonnen met ze in stukken te breken in de bak. Aad ging 17:00u naar huis, nadat de bak geleegd was.

Many corals were just to big to transfer to the new tank so me made a few hunderd frags and transfer a normal size colony to the new tank.

Later on at 19:30pm leon koopmans and stefan vonk arrived and the did some scaping in section2 with the heap of corals which were temperary placed before in section3.
After that  we start transplanting the Butterflyreef into sections3.
After that we lifted the empty 1200 liter tank on 4 trolley en park is behind the soft for the time being.
Because leon insisted on seeing the result we also connected the ligthing right away and enjoyed a hard days work.

Saterday, oktober 23, 2021 - #panoramareef -  the liftmechanism. Because the lightfixture was sitting on top of section2 i was not able to do any scaping to make place for the other corals,  so i needed to mount the lifting mechanism to get acces to the tank. It took some measuring, fitting and welding to designing a mounting piece for the wire to bend the corners. But finally it was done.

Zaterdag, 23 oktober 2021 - #panoramareef - het liftmechanisme. Omdat de lamp boven op sectie2 zat kon ik geen plaats maken voor de andere koralen, dus moest ik het hefmechanisme monteren om toegang te krijgen tot de sectie2. Het kostte wat meten, passen en lassen om een montagestuk te ontwerpen voor de draad om de hoeken om te gaan. Maar uiteindelijk was het klaar.

Saterday, oktober 16, 2021. #panoramareef - sump?
I wasn't sure whether i wanted a sump, because of the energy spills of moving large volumes of water up all the time.
First i planned to use 2-3 surface skimmers, but each have  moving part in full light, which would require extra maintenance. I had some glas lying around, so just to be save i decided to build a sump anyway.
Because the stand was already build, filled and operational, it was not possible to place a single sump required to hold enough water without removing a support beam.
So the sump was build in 2 pieces and put together on the spot.

Zaterdag, 16 oktober, 2021. #panoramareef - sump?
Ik was niet zeker of ik een sump wilde, vanwege de energie verspilling van het hele tijd omhoog verplaatsen van grote hoeveelheden water.
Eerst was ik van plan om 2-3 oppervlakte skimmers te gebruiken, maar elk hebben ze bewegend deel in vol licht, wat extra onderhoud zou vereisen. Ik had nog wat glas liggen, dus om het zekere voor het onzekere te nemen besloot ik toch maar een sump te bouwen.
Omdat het aquarium al gebouwd, gevuld en operationeel was, was het niet mogelijk om een enkele sump te plaatsen die voldoende water zou bevatten zonder een steunbalk te verwijderen.
Dus werd de sump in 2 stukken gebouwd en ter plaatse in elkaar gezet.

Wednesday, oktober 20, 2021 #panoramareef- placing the sump.
The sump was placed between the support beams.  A few days later (oktober 25) we  made  aditional saltwater in the sump to raise the waterlevel  of the tank to be able to activate the sump.
The main reason for me to install the sump is the surface skimming and secondly i didn't want to extend and recalibrate the water intake of the KHD.

Woensdag, 20 oktober 2021 # panoramareef- het plaatsen van de sump.
De sump werd tussen de steunbalken geplaatst.  Een paar dagen later ( 25 oktober) hebben we extra zout water in de sump aangemaakt om het waterpeil van het aquarium te verhogen om de sump te kunnen activeren.
De belangrijkste reden voor mij om de sump te plaatsen is het afromen van het oppervlak en ten tweede wilde ik de waterinlaat van de KHD niet verlengen en opnieuw kalibreren.

Tuesday, November 16,  2021, The #panoramareef is in the starting phase with all the up's and downs that goes with it. Now you have to be careful not to rush things .
I also went shopping at my main supplier of supplements.
I feel Blessed to have a GHL Profilux4 and accompanying KHD running.
The KHD calculator has been adjusted for EZ2Go and is on testing phase.
After a false start where dinos and then algae got the upper hand, the light has been off for 3 days and 10 urchins have been added.
Patience is a virtue. The photos speak for themselves.

Today i gave myself a good treat, with four new inhabitants for the Panoramareef

Yesterday januari 14, 2022 i got these 2 cheatodon semilarvatus from a friend. After decenia of keeping coralivores in a reeftank he wanted a good home for them and change his focus to coral keeping.
I have always wanted these, but never really had the conditions and opportunity to get some nice speciments.

These are all the system i have running now.
The total consumption of all tanks during daytime (15:30h) is about 4700watt
Average light period= 13hours
(2300+1050+1080+120+120)
The total water volume is ~ 6100 liters
I estimate all the tanks uses ~65KWh per day.

Today i moved the diningroom into the aquarium room.
No regrets at all. The panoramareef, nearly 6 months after it was build. Now the colors are taking off!
Somehow it took the system 6 months to get the most out of it's potential. This is a turning point!

NOT A SINGLE WATERCHANGE WAS DONE SINCE THE START! Somehow novice reefers still get the advice from "experts" to do regular waterchanges. Nowadays there are modern and less wastefull ways to be succesfull with a reeftank. De spotlight van vandaag is deze felrode bloempotkoraal (Goniopora Lobata). Ik heb deze met veel succes vermeerderd en in verschillende omstandigheden geplaatst, waardoor ze er heel verschillend uitzien.

Today's spotlight is this bright red flowerpot coral (Goniopora Lobata). This coral has been propagated with great success. Placed in different conditions, the colours have developed a few variations

At one time, I got this coral as ultra-goniopora. Recently, I discovered that the correct name for this species is bernardpora. I had had it since 2015 and until recently it was not growing really fast. Now the propagation is going quite well.

Ooit heb ik dit koraal als ultra-goniopora gekregen. Onlangs ontdekte ik dat de juiste naam voor deze soort bernardpora is. Ik had hem sinds 2015 en tot voor kort groeide hij niet echt hard. Nu gaat de vermeerdering best goed.

A while ago i bought a small frag from this pink goniopora w.yellow centre. Now i manage to let it  flourishing and also succesfully propagated it. I spead it out over several systems and observe how it will develop.

Een tijdje geleden heb ik een klein stekje gekocht van deze roze goniopora met geel hartje. Nu lukt het me om hem te laten bloeien en hem ook succesvol te vermeerderen. Ik heb het over meerdere systemen verspreidt om te kijken hoe hij zich zal ontwikkelen.

This coral was given to me by a LFS because it was slowly dying and he intended to throw it in the garbage bin.
After a slow recovery it started to flourish from a dull yellow coral to a colorfull bernardpora with intense orange tentacles and green centre.
I need to frag it soon, because i am out of space.i also need to make frags for the savekeeping of this specie.

Dit koraal kreeg ik van een winkelier omdat het langzaam doodging en hij het in de vuilnisbak wilde gooien.
Na een langzaam herstel begon het op te bloeien van een saai geel koraal tot een kleurrijke bernardpora met intens oranje tentakels met een groen hart.
Ik moet hem binnenkort stekken, want ik heb geen ruimte meer. Ik moet ook stekken maken voor het veiligstellen van deze soort.

A few critical readers broached the subject that many posted photo looked unnatural and exaggerated and drew the conclusion that it couldn't be otherwise that they must have been post-processed with photoshop or lightroom.
In short, no photos are post-processed because it is a time-consuming and inefficient way of posting. Moreover, it often misrepresents reality.
Here, the problems are tackled differently.
- It starts with getting the most out of the lighting, so that the result (growth and colour) is also satisfactory to the eye.
- Then we set up this lighting for the camera so that it can do something with it directly.
- Because we use a predominantly blue spectrum in marine aquaria, every photo will be blue. That's why we set the white balance correction to 10K Kelvin.
By carrying out the above steps properly, you basically don't have to edit all photos afterwards to get a decent result. This will save you from boring operations and you won't be tempted to overdo things either.
Here you can see what you can achieve with the right lighting, camera setting (2sec) and direct posting(5sec). It doesn't get any more effective than this with post-processing all the photos
Fishes are an indispensable part of our aquarium ecosystem. They are part of it and you want to enjoy the colourful splendour of these fish both live and on camera. That doesn't work under tight blue light. You can also see from the colours of these fish that there has been no messing around with photo editing programmes and filters.
In the first photo, the exposure is set slightly darker on camera. Not excessive but bad to reduce the haze/reflection of the lights on the windscreen.

Een paar kritische lezers sneden het onderwerp aan dat veel geposte foto onnatuurlijk en overdreven overkwamen en trokken de conclusie dat het niet anders kon dat ze moeten zijn nabewerk met photoshop of lightroom.
Om kort te zijn: er worden geen foto's nabewerkt, omdat het een tijdrovend en onefficient manier van posten is. Bovendien is het vaak een foute representie van de werkelijkheid.
Hier worden de problemen anders aangepakt.
- Het begint met het optimale uit de verlichting  te halen, zodat het resultaat (groei en kleur) voor het oog ook bevredigend is.
- daarna gaan we deze verlichting voor de camera instellen zodat dat die er ook direct iets mee kan.
- omdat wij in het zeeaquarium en voornamelijk blauw spectrum gebruiken zal elke foto blauw uitslaan. Daarvoor doen we de witbalans correctie op 10K kelvin.
Door bovenstaande stappen goed uit te voeren hoef je in principe niet alle foto's achteraf te bewerken om een fatsoenlijk resultaat te krijgen. Daarmee bespaar je op saaie handelingen en kom je ook niet in de verleiding de zaken te overdrijven.
Hier zie je wat je kan bereiken met de juiste verlichting, camera instelling (2sec) en direct posten(5sec). Effectiever dan dit gaat het niet met nabewerken van alle foto's
Vissen zijn een onmisbaar onderdeel van het ecosysteem van ons aquarium. Het hoort erbij en je wilt zowel live als  via de camera van de kleurenpracht van deze vissen kunnen genieten. Dat lukt niet onder strak blauw licht. Je ziet aan die vissen  ook dat er niet gerommeld is met fotobewerking programmas en voorzetfilters.
Bij de eerste foto is de belichting iets donkerder ingesteld bij de camera. Niet overdreven maar slecht om de waas/reflectie van de lampen op de voorruit te verminderen.

Last week I placed this beautiful suncoral into my panoramareef Section1.
Every night it opens up and I start feeding it mysis and brine.
The trick is to keep them in the dark and slowly train them to open up during the day by shifting the feeding time

This is the  sump for the panoramareef with total 3200 liters.. Simplicity is key.
The Profilux P4 with KHDirector is a great asset. It makes reefkeeping carefree.

The panoramareef section3
This tank is running unprecedented low on supporting equipment. NO skimmer, low flow towards sump (2500/h returnpump), No waterchanges from the start (2021). Just two powerfilters (5000l/h + 3000l/h), UV and Ozone to prevent Itch outbreaks. The GHL profilux4 and KHDirector keep a close watch on the parameters and makes life much easier.

I am very happy in which direction this tank is going now. The corals are flourishing up despite the many butterflies and angelfishes which are know to peck on the corals.
